Pine Tree Acres

Our Program

THE BEGINNING

Fifteen years ago my brother and I heard about the "Foundation" Beefmaster cow and he and I took a trip to San Angelo, Texas to meet the Lasater family - the founder of this Breed of cattle in America. Before we left San Angelo, he and I had purchased 20 pairs from their herd because we were so impressed with the fact we saw bulls with very "clean" underlines and cows that looked good, even in the toughest of environments. We brought these cows home, along with two herd bulls, and within two years, we witnessed the power of these herd bulls in cleaning up our herd of traditional South Texas Beefmaster cattle.

At first, we were concerned with the climate change effects Louisiana would have on these cattle that were acclimated to a more "desert" kind of environment in Texas, but we were pleasantly surprised they adapted well and to say the cattle were "prolific" is truly an understatement. These "Foundation" cattle, year after year, met and exceeded the six essentials of the breed - Disposition, Fertility, Weight, Conformation, Milk Production, and Hardiness, and continues to do so today. My brother is gone now but Pine Tree Acres remains committed to continuing with the herd we developed together, but always open and looking for ways to make the best even better.

MOVING FORWARD

Since my brother's passing, I moved the herd to Southwest Arkansas, and working with the local Farm Services Agency, our goal is to take advantage of the highest and best use of our farmland, initiating rotational grazing, fencing the cattle out of the creeks and ponds, while at the same time demonstrating that well-managed grazing techniques can also provide a healthy habitat for the deer and other wildlife and clean water for all. We fully believe, as we put these practices into place, and manage them responsibly our Beefmaster herd of cattle will continue to grow, just like the tall pine trees, well into the future.
